Scheepjes: Grannies for Grannies (and Granddads!)

This is a special Call To Action for crafters far and wide!

Let’s grab our crochet hooks and craft for those who might be struggling with isolation during the coronavirus outbreak.

Scheepjes calls all crafters across the globe to action with our special community project suitable for absolute beginners and advanced crocheters alike. During these uncertain times of self-isolation and quarantine, feelings of anxiety, worry, and loneliness can start to take hold of us. What better way to occupy your hands and minds, and reduce stress and anxiety levels than through the mindful practice of crochet? Or if you are looking to learn a new craft, then Grannies for Grannies (and Granddads!) might be the perfect project for you.

Learn How to Crochet

Our community project is also the perfect way for you or your friends and family to learn how to crochet! We chose the accessible and FREE Kizzy Granny Square Blanket, designed by our Scheepjes Blogger Maria of 50 Shades of 4 Ply, for our Grannies for Grannies (and Granddads!) project. This pattern consists of large and small granny squares, making it perfect for beginners! Scheepjes Blogger Esther of It’s all in a Nutshell blog, kindly made detailed video tutorials (for both right and left-handed crocheters) to help those who are new to our craft. She explains step-by-step how to create granny squares and join them to make this vibrant blanket. Esther also provides suggestions in her videos for an alternative, simpler border for the blanket.

Are you a seasoned crocheter?
This project is also for you! The simple Granny Square is the perfect canvas to experiment with colours and practice mindful crochet.

Join us and grab your favourite crochet hook and yarn. Let’s do this collectively. If we all share our progress in our Official Scheepjes Facebook Groups (Dutch and International), we will support each other and feel united by the goal we share: to crochet a colourful blanket for a loved one, someone elderly, or a more vulnerable member of your community to remind them that they are loved, and that people are thinking of them. We will also provide tips on how you can give your make to someone safely during this pandemic.

Yarn Suggestions

The original blanket is crocheted using Scheepjes River Washed. This project is perfect for varying between different colours and yarns. It would also be a wonderful stash buster project! We would like to highlight a few alternatives:
